Build foundations off the ice
Follow the step by step guidance to develop lift skills off the ice first. This allows skaters to gain confidence, understand correct technique and practise communication without the added risk of the ice surface.
Transfer skills safely on to the ice
Use the progressions and examples to transfer the same movements to the ice. The focus is on safe teaching techniques, building trust, and developing consistency before increasing complexity.

Course description
This course aims to give coaches clear, practical knowledge on developing lift skills that are relevant to the demands of Dance, Pairs and Synchro. The step by step guide explains how to build lifts off the ice first, helping skaters gain confidence and competence before transferring the skills on to the ice.
You will explore methods and guidance that support safe teaching techniques, build trust between partners and coaching staff, and create the foundations needed to develop skills to elite level. Upon completion, coaches can continue to access the course as a resource for best practice and ongoing development.
Learning outcomes
- Develop the confidence to instruct session users when safety is in danger and make clear decisions about when to stop or adapt a lift.
- Be able to conduct a safe lifting session both on and off the ice, using progressions that match the ability and readiness of the skaters.
- Build awareness of the reasons why lifts may be avoided and know how to identify, discuss and act on these reasons with skaters.
- Use the course as a resource for continuous guidance and best practice in lifting, supporting your long term development as a coach.
